Aside from that, I just noticed again how much I really really love the early medieval period and how badly I must go to Oslo for this really awesome master's program. Arghlaldhdbssfff. But where to take the money frommmmmmaaaaach ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)
Seriously though, why is it, that there is no one I can fangirl with over Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, Thor, Loki and all that kind of shit in a really super nerdy way? Where are all the history buffs hiding?? :T My fellow students aren't much of an option to turn to. It's like talking against a wall with them ;_;
What's worse though, is how bad I got with drawing. I really got rusty, but that's not the bad part. There is simply no need or desire to do it; of course, I doodle when talking on the phone or during our Werewolf-sessions, it helps me concentrate, but actually drawing? Not so much. I have ideas and images in my head, but lack everything else. The hell is happening?
So in conclusion: Fuck you life, why do you always keep the really good things just out of my reach? >:C
Harry Potter is in love with Severus and Remus, who are together. Before
he graduates, Harry Potter spends the night with them. Hurt and in pain
because he thinks his feelings aren't returned, Harry leaves Hogwarts.
Harry finds out that he is pregnant. Will he tell Severus and Remus? Is
there any hope for the three men?

I am reading the Völsunga saga currently and I've had this mental image of Regin as a dark haired, grimy smith with wild eyes, barrel chested and tree trunk like arms. Turns out he's actually a dwarf. Dödöt. As Völuspá and Reginsmál relate him to the dvergar, I suppose its a given fact and I can scratch my beautifully constructed design and start anew. Baaaah.
Then again, I had been wondering, how Regin could have such a strange family without displaying any of the genetic peculiarities himself. I even wondered, with whom his father had lain to beget an otter and a dragon as sons respectively. But Hreiðmarr is the King of the Dwarves himself, sooooo there you go. These dwarves, I tell you. Crazy shape shifters, the lot of them...
Talking about dwarves: Andvari who loses his gold and the ring Andvarinaut (which he both curses) to Loki, is also a shape shifter, living beneath the waterfall Andvarafors as a luce. For some reason, he reminds me of Gollum.... Oh yeah, he's apparently the equivalent to Alberich, another King* of the Dwarves (or Elves?), as well, who can turn invisible and guards the Nibelungen hoard. BUT! And that's the interesting part: apparently, some scholars see him as the original Oberon, which is the French translation of his name. The more you know *rainbow*.
I still cannot believe Regin is a midget. :(
Anyways, here an illustration from the Ramsund rune carving to cheer me up and to mark a worthy ending to a silly post (I cannot even begin to explain how funny I find Sigurd down there, stabbing Fafnir and all. And that face of the dragon OHGOD WHAT IS AIR):
*I swear, they call anyone rich and important enough to be mentioned in these sagas a king...
Yesterday was a very strange day, with mocking rainbows on our way along Skye's coast line (Hell, we even checked into a B+B which was called 'Rainbow view' with a very pink room). Didn't manage to do our pensum of driving that day, however. I suppose, at least we gained XPs and perhaps even a Level Up by learning how to change a tire. Life Skills, you cannot buy them.
You anime fangurls can go stick your shitty bishifantasies, dumb names und speshul feelings up to where the sun doesn't shine. Oh, and just a hint: do grow up. Maybe then your life will actually start to be entertaining and interesting for once.
What I actually wanted to say, is this:
Nadia had bought a pair of shoes quite a while ago from a second hand shop. Lovely, fancy things, white and delicate that do not fit her. So I was to have them to wear and flounce around in them. Gosh, they are beautiful.
Now, I finally seized the chance to wear them and... by the time I reached the bar, I was walking barefoot. Have been the whole night since then - never noticed before how clean Berlin's streets actually are. Hardly any glass shards or other kinds of litter. My feet were black by the time I came home, naturally, but not hurting from anything else but the shoes I had worn earlier. I know now why this gorgeous pair was resold. You cannot possibly wear them without abrasions and blisters on the heels and pressure marks along the toes. Satan must have fashioned them himself, no kidding.
I think we will sell them as well. Someone else be subjected to the pain, for despite all temptations, the ache cannot be possibly endured. Not on the long run, no matter how pretty they are.
A few happier notes: I bought Hitman- Blood Money for PS2 finally. Also started reading Going Postal by Pratchett, god, I love that man. And last but not least - I made fantastic Wok-food today: beef, spring onions, sesame oil, soy sauce, orange + orange juice, honey = YUMYUMYUM. Successful Saturday, Y/Y?
What else there was:
Asshole!Charles butting in in people's mind and memories without asking. Btw, I know your pain, horrible what you experienced. But you gotta stay, yeah, Imma gonna make you cuz I just saved your ass. We BBF from now on, RIGHT?
Chubby teen Mystique with no abilities except talking shit and looking for looooove.
Only black guy who is actually also the only interesting character: killed off. Thank you. NOT.
Villain with no real motives, hello Kevin Bacon, and a stupid helmet that likens his nose to that of a pig. I ain't f'king kidding.
That woman with tits and blond hair.
This other woman with tits but no mutation.
Also Mystique showing tits. Did I mention she popped out of nowhere, the hell did she come from?? Didn't Charles' parents have anything to say on the matter of her staying?
Ron Weasley as flying Mothman.
WTF Soviet Russia bombs YOU.
That guy who controlled... tornadoes, but couldn't apparently talk. He was just there.
Also russian Niet!Azazel, uuuh. Say "niet" again!
Erik and his coin. Crying. Multiple times. Omg, that scene with his mom and the menorah, so special, so touching.
Background music, IT NEVER STOPPED ARGH
Charles reaching for his temple with two fingers is going to be a secret code of idiocy from now on. Or maybe not so secret. Concentrate HARDER. Or yell, depends. Maybe Erik will hear you somehow despite the helmet, uh huh.
Fireflygirl has no reason to join or not to join one side or the other. She's just there and looks shitty.
Erik crying. One more time, c'mon.
I kinda expected Emma Frost to get out the dildo when he said Charles had left a hole in him and he hoped Emma could fill it. That was like... the only time I laughed at the most inappropriate moment (usually I was forcing my mouth shut with my hand or just shaking my head). Alright, ok, when Erik mentioned it was ok for Moriah to come closer while Charles lay in his lap, CRYING, that was pretty funny too.
All in all, Charles and Erik were pretty gay (have been for the entire movie for no apparent reason. SOOOO TIGHT) Maybe it must have been all those deep intense and honest conversations over their two chess games or what have you. T_T It is obvious that the movie was meant to be about Magneto's origins, for all the revenge-hunt down-kill storyline. But it was for nought, since there were simply too many characters, probably to lure more viewers to the theatre. Idk. XMen First Class could have been so much more than it actually was. I srsly missed the depth. The actors were never given the chance to really show their talent with the crappy script. Even a teenager could have written better dialogues.
The thing I will do now is pretend X-Men: First Class never happened. Like X3 never happened. It's all a bad dream, lalala.
At least I still have you, Thor-movie. You are one pretty, shiny movie with Shakespearean ambitions, upholding the ideal of 'showing not telling' and trying to find sense in your character's doings. And your actors are adorkable. Yeahhhhh.
This is all I need ♥
I don't know how to incorporate audio files so here's the original source, listen to this!!
But before thee alone - do I now go forth,
Such feasts shalt thou make no more;

Anyways, please listen to this song, it is super good: Dust Bowl Dance by Mumford & Sons *_* Also 'Roll away your stone' by the same band is equally enthralling and so so catchy.
This is all c:I know this is hardly of interest to anyone, but I was close to naming this post "ljúgið eða segið satt" (Lie or speak true.)
Super super awesome mythological Loki + Thor + Odin Story: A Game of Shapes !!!! True to character and sources. Aaaaah *instant fav forever*
Also, if you were wondering about Odin's "No, Loki." at the end, here's a little story which explores the meaning behind it. Very IC, imho: Letting Go.
( Still, how about a few selected pictures of Castiel, hmmm? c: )
You know what else I love?? *rrr* Loki from the new movie Thor! HELL YES, he blew me away. Loved loved loved Tom Hiddleston's performance (Tom is a cutepie, adorable and fun and what a voice!). So heart wrenching. I wanted to hug that man the whole time through, somebody tell him he is appreciated and loved, pleaaaase. He really impressed me, that Loki. Finally I have a pretty face to go with the awesomeness that is the god of mischief and, after quite some struggling with myself, I kinda like this comic-Loki. I couldn't guess at what he was thinking most of the time. His psychological make up is just this side of plausible and layered, that it's ok that he's not THE Loki from the mythology. He still pushes all the right buttons:
The more weakly brother: check
Amoral ambiguity: check
Questionable motives: check
Predictable... NOT: check
Some more angsting: check
Social outcast: check
Villain: check check check fffffffffffffffffffff
Omg, I can't even... I just... I .... aaaaah *falls into a coma* Maybe I'll be more coherent later but for now, I wish to pic spam. :B
So, have at thee: ( LOKI/TOM HIDDLESTON SPAM! )
And to top it off, I did a BioLoveMatch for Tom and I, yes, I went there. GUESS WHAT:
physical 100% <---- wtffffffffffff
intellectual 96% <---- aldhahsdjhs!!
*dead for real*
I know you're probably upset with me for suggesting that it might not be wise to complain about others not crediting your work when you constantly delete things. I apologize for that. I didn't realize there were other contributing factors.
But now my curiosity is piqued. You are very talented, and even if I'm not interested in the particular fandom, I can still appreciate the work that you put into each drawing. I admit that I think it's a bit sad that you don't draw original work and only focus on fanart, but that's me being selfish to see what you'd come up with on your own.
So where does the passion come from? Is drawing, for you, merely a compulsion? Are fandom and drawing tied together? What would you draw if you didn't draw fanart?
Thank you for answering. -sweet2nothing
if i didn’t draw fanart, i wouldn’t draw anything. i would probably write. or teach earth science.
i like seeing what makes a character look like he does, is all. i like the feeling of putting marks on paper. it’s not really passion. it’s arbitrary.
but i think it’s sad that you wish i drew original work. that’s like saying to someone, “i don’t believe this is really you.”
people who draw original art get praised for their vision and creativity. you don’t have to be familiar with any of their characters, and you don’t have to be in any fandom to know what’s going on. no prior knowledge is required because you love what they do as artists.
but people who draw fanart only get a sidestep reaction. it’s either “i don’t know who this is, but you drew it very well” or “congratulations; you’ve made it look like him. now will you please grow up and stop being silly and draw us something we can actually like?”
you wouldn’t think to say these things to regular artists because regular art is about the artist herself. but fanart? well, that’s okay, because fanart is just a trick. it’s just wasted time.
i think you should stop sending me messages.
I can actually heartily agree with Euclase here. Never saw it like this, but it's true. Not everyone craves to be an 'artist' who makes a living with original art. Maybe out of fear, or lack of support. For some it's a calling, a passion, and they pursue their dreams til the very end no matter what - and that's great! But for me it's a wonderful hobby, simple as that. This does not necessarily mean my art is worthless because I have a different mindset, a different approach... or does it?
What do you guys think? Do you view fanart as a waste of time and talent?
I started reading Tacitus' Germania, and figured that quite a lot of social structures have not changed that much (granted, Tacitus does not delve as deep as he could have - but the few limited views he grants us, I find quite telling). They coincide with Viking social structure quite nicely. Does not sound that amazing (yet), but if you consider most sources on Viking society were written during the high middle ages... that's a gap of about 1000 odd years. Has so little changed? Or rather, are the fundamental powers still intact because of the things which have NOT changed (landscape, climate, foes)? Plus, isn't the sheer preservation in the face of Christianity just astonishing! Regardless, using what we know of Viking homosexuality and its hazards to back us up, Tacitus' record on punishment suddenly gains another level of meaning - So lets recapture, and then assume...
[Licet apud concilium accusare quoque et discrimen capitis intendere. distinctio poenarum ex delicto: proditores et transfugas arboribus suspendunt, ignavos et imbelles et corpore infames caeno ac palude, iniecta insuper crate, mergunt. Diversitas supplicii illuc respicit, tamquam scelera ostendi oporteat, dum puniuntur, flagitia abscondi.]
In their councils an accusation may be preferred or a capital crime prosecuted. Penalties are distinguished according to the offense. Traitors and deserters are hanged on trees; the coward, the unwarlike, the man stained with abominable vices, is plunged into the mire of the morass, with a hurdle put over him. This distinction in punishment means that crime, they think, ought, in being punished, to be exposed, while infamy ought to be buried out of sight.
I am merely speculating, of course. Considering virðing/drengskapr (similar to lat. virtus) as the forever unachievable ideal/social system, its origin and power it undeniably had over Vikings, the punishment for cowards does not seem so out of place anymore. The opposite of honor is shame, and what shames a man more if not meeting the ideal - an ideal, that is the ultimate goal of each individual. If a man is less than what he is supposed to be - what is he, then? Something different, the opposite. He must, by default, thus be female (or an animal.) Now, I won't open that Pandora's box today of how women were viewed - mostly because Tacitus' record of that differs a little from later Viking society's standard - and skip right into the actual argument instead:
Perversity, "the man stained with abominable vices", is regarded as severe as cowardice. How do these two coincide? Taking into account that only the receiving partner in a homosexual encounter had to suffer the full penalty of his sordid (or should I say sorðinn? Hurhurhur) act while the active partner is undoubtedly the victor, homosexuality was first and foremost a demonstration of dominance. It was a practice used against enemies and competitors as means of establishing a position within society. There was nothing shameful in using a man like a woman, but certainly in being used, in submitting and becoming less than a man. Simply the accusation of being a coward and thus unmanly, was so utterly shameful, a discredit disrupting not only to the man's equilibrium (helgi), but his kin's, that the Icelandic and Norwegian laws demanded the death (or exile) of the accuser, if it was unfounded.
Due to Tacitus' accumulation, we can easily make the connection between the coward, the unmanly and the sexual deviant. They all denote the same kind of person. It is obvious, then, why they would all be doomed to the same fate as well. Unlike traitors and deserters, whose crime it were to nourish different morals and not a fundamental flaw in their nature. One could even assume, that hanging traitors up on trees for all to see, the meaning becomes "Don't do it", as opposed to the unmistakable message of "Don't be it" when it comes to the second group of offenders.
I am not sure whether anyone has compared Tacitus' account of Germanic life/costume etc with the much later age of the Vikings, but I am sure, I wasn't the first one to follow that train of thought. Aaaaanyways. What's more important right now... OMG I CAN HAZ?

But that wasn't what I was going to say. I found the DB Kinkmeme.

O.E. writan "to score, outline, draw the figure of," later "to set down in writing" (class I strong verb; past tense wrat, pp. writen), from P.Gmc. *writanan "tear, scratch" (cf. O.Fris. writa "to write," O.S. writan "to tear, scratch, write," O.N. rita "write, scratch, outline," O.H.G. rizan "to write, scratch, tear," Ger. reißen "to tear, pull, tug, sketch, draw, design"), outside connections doubtful. Words for "write" in most I.E languages originally mean "carve, scratch, cut" (cf. L. scribere, Gk. grapho, Skt. rikh-); a few originally meant "paint" (cf. Goth. meljan, O.C.S. pisati, and most of the modern Slavic cognates).
Also hätte das dt. "schreiben" auch als "reißen" oder "ritzen" enden können. Stattdessen haben wir uns ans Lateinische gehalten. Schade, schade.
